Black Eyed Pea Dip

According to Southern tradition, the first food to be served on New Year's Day is black-eyed peas. They are said to bring good luck and prosperity in the new year. Mix a little luck with a yummy dip and you have the makings of a great New Year's party! Enjoy!  

Black Eyed Pea Dip



  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, sliced and seeded
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 28 oz black-eyed peas
  • 4 oz chopped green chiles
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 bag corn chips, or pita chips


  1. Drain and rinse black eyed peas. Reserve for later.
  2. In a skillet, sauté onion and jalapeño in butter.
  3. When onion is translucent and jalapeno is tender, add cheeses. Stir constantly until melted and smooth.
  4. Add remaining ingredients and heat through.
  5. Serve with your choice of chips or toast bites.
